Located just thirteen miles south of Salt Lake City, Sandy was a predictable and likely place for settlement. First inhabited by nomadic Native American tribes like the Paiutes, Shoshones and Bannocks,  the first permanent settlers began establishing homes in the area during the 1860s and 1870s. The city was first settled as a farming community, but when silver mining began in nearby Little Cottonwood Canyon Sandy quickly became a boom town and oft-frequented supply station.

The addition of a railroad in 1873 connected Sandy to Salt Lake City permanently, helping Sandy survive through years of persistent change and growth.
