West Jordan Community
Named after the nearby Jordan River, the limits of West Jordan begin on the river’s western bank and end in the eastern foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains. Here Kennecott Copper Mine – the largest man-made excavation in the world – is visible from all around the valley, offering a unique and striking look compared to the rest of the surrounding mountains.
West Jordan was founded in 1849 and is now a rapidly growing suburb of Salt Lake City. It boasts a rich, mixed economy and is ranked the fourth most populous city in the state. Companies headquartered in West Jordan include Mountain America Credit Union, Lynco Sales & Service, SME Steel and Cyprus Credit Union. The city also has one major hospital, Jordan Valley Medical Center, and a Salt Lake Community College campus slated to become the main campus by 2020.
Something of a hidden gem in the West Jordan area, Gardner Village is an enchanting shopping center with the distinct charm of an early Utah Village. The center is distinguished by its old-fashioned grace, and is filled with 22 boutique-style shops and dining venues.
West Jordan School District
Most of West Jordan falls under Jordan School District’s umbrella. However, due to a pair of annexations, two small sections along the city’s northern border lie within the Granite School District. The city has sixteen elementary schools (including one in the Granite District), four middle schools, and two high schools (West Jordan and Copper Hills). It is also the location of campuses of Salt Lake Community College and Broadview University

West Jordan History
First settled in 1849 (just two years after the first settlers entered the Salt Lake Valley) West Jordan was named for the nearby Jordan River, which flows from the freshwater Utah Lake to the inland salt sea known as The Great Salt Lake. West Jordan initially relied on agriculture, mills, and mining activity to sustain its early economy, but the first leather tannery west of the Mississippi River was also constructed in the city in 1851.
Since the 1970s, the city’s growth has steadily increased and shows no signs of slowing down. Old West Jordan is currently being reconstructed as a public transit-oriented development. The plans include an expanded main park, a history museum, an indoor recreation center, a senior center and a large courthouse.
Like other Utah cities, West Jordan is experiencing something of a revolution–it’s in the beginnings of a statewide boom, and now is the time to plant roots.
